Skyscanner reveals the airports expecting surges in passengers within the festive period

The festive period always drives an increase in travel and, consequently, busier travel hubs. If you are an airline, a busy airport will signal a need for substantial operational preparation. Equally, if you are an airport you will also need to ensure you have enough staff on-hand to handle the increased footfall. On the more positive side, the increase in airport visitors could present opportunities for retailers, so it could be worth telling shops to stock up if you are one of the airports on this list!

In this data piece, we share which of our top airports will see the greatest surge in passengers across the festive period as well as which of these airports will experience a surge in passengers on a specific day within the festive period. To achieve this, we have performed an analysis, using Skyscanner Travel Insight data, on the exits data of our top airports across Q4 and the festive period*.

The airports that will see a surge in passengers across the holiday period

Based on Skyscanner Travel Insight data, we have mapped out which of our top airports will see the greatest surge in passengers across the festive period. The numbers in the map represent the percentage of Q4 exits that are for travel during the festive period.

The airports that will see a surge in passengers on a specific day of the holiday period

Based on Skyscanner Travel Insight data, we have mapped out which of our top airports will see the greatest surge in passengers on any single day within the festive period. This has been calculated by giving an indexed value to each day within the festive period based on the proportion of the total volume of passengers within the festive period (where the total volume of passengers = 100) that is experienced on that day.

To illustrate which day each of these airports will experience a surge, we have also produced a series of charts (shown below) that illustrate the index of each day within the festive period and the index of the peak day.
