Intro-1-1-2

Discover the latest search insights and destination trends for June – August 2024.

Improved air connectivity and seat capacity are helping to make travel easier, both regionally and internationally, as airlines respond to traveller demand. Plus, interest in Asia-Pacific destinations is continuing to accelerate from its popularity surge last year.

We revealed in our previous end-of-year Horizons report that travel remains a top priority as people continue to ring-fence their budgets and invest discretionary spend in leisure trips. This is against a backdrop of global inflationary pressures and higher average fares vs pre-pandemic, although there are signs of airfare stabilisation.

Alongside booking windows stabilising year-on-year, we're seeing increases in search volumes to destinations closer to home, like EMEA travellers choosing Europe, as well as a shortening of trip lengths, especially for long-haul travel, as travellers increasingly look for value.

Intro-2-1

Booking windows

There’s a return to traditional seasonality as travellers across EMEA, AMER and APAC book further ahead than this time last year. The start of the year is a peak booking time and indicative of traveller confidence for the months ahead. Analysing the share of booking windows and comparing them year-on-year provides a view on travel propensity, as well as travellers behaviour.

EMEA traveller confidence remains high and is growing

Booking windows at the start of 2024 remain similar to the same period last year, but there’s a +1% rise in the longest booking windows of 60-89 and 90+ days, with 90+ days making up 37% of demand in this region.

In AMER, booking windows of 90+ days make up a third of demand

More AMER travellers are booking later

Fewer travellers from the Americas are booking travel earlier compared to this time last year. There’s a +3% growth in windows of 90+ days, with small declines in the mid-length windows of 30-59 days and 14-29 days. 90+ days represents a third of demand.

Booking windows over 30 days increase in APAC

Travellers across APAC are taking advantage of more capacity and connectivity returning to their region, booking further ahead compared to 2023.

There’s an increase in all booking windows over 30 days, with a +2% jump in the 90+ day segment. Booking windows of two months or more now represent over a third of demand in this region.

Favourite continents to explore

Next, we explore which continents travellers are planning to visit between June and August 2024 (the summer months in the northern hemisphere and the winter months in the southern hemisphere) and how this has changed year-on-year from 2023.

More EMEA travellers are exploring their own backyard

At 53%, more EMEA travellers (+4%) are choosing Europe as a summer holiday destination in 2024 compared to last year.

The only other increase in popularity (+1%) from last year is Southeast Asia, which sees 12% of EMEA travellers choosing to visit the region.

This shift is being primarily driven by a -4% decline in North America. It’s likely the strength of the US Dollar is encouraging some travellers in this region to seek more affordability and low-cost travel closer to home.

Outside of this changing demand, the continent destination choice is broadly in line with 2023.

More EMEA travellers are searching Europe as a summer holiday destination compared to last year

South America grows in popularity with AMER travellers

Like last year, the most popular region for AMER travellers between June and August is Europe, though it’s down 1% from 2023, alongside the Middle East and North Africa. 2% fewer travellers are choosing to visit North America and Africa.

So where are AMER travellers turning to? There’s a +3% increase to South America, a +2% increase to North Asia and +1% increases to Southeast Asia. The shift in destination mix to South America is likely due to its increasing popularity among US and Canadian travellers, as well as the availability of more affordable flights.

European searches shift to intra-regional for APAC travellers

10% fewer APAC travellers are booking trips to Europe this summer. From over two-thirds setting their sights on Europe in 2023, just over a half are doing so this year – however, it still remains the most popular segment.

So, what’s happening? More people are exploring their own region: +4% are choosing North Asia and +1% Southeast Asia. Seat capacity is returning to the region and many travellers are indicating a desire to swap long-haul trips with short or medium ones, or even domestic trips (with an eye on their budget to help keep costs down).

51% of travellers coming to Skyscanner don't have a destination or dates in mind and are looking to be inspired

Most popular and top trending destinations worldwide

We now look at the most searched-for cities from each region overall, as well as the fastest trending destinations which have experienced the largest year-on-year search increases for the equivalent travel period.

Most popular destinations for EMEA travellers

EMEA travellers are looking for summer sun

Spanish and Greek destinations make up six of the top 10 global list for travellers across EMEA in 2024, with an average trip lengths of around six to eight days, indicating a desire to holiday in Europe.

Bangkok is the highest ranked long-haul destination, with New York City and Sydney also making the top 10, with average trip lengths of between 11 and 15 days.

‘Everywhere’ remains very popular as travellers search for destination inspiration, coming to Skyscanner without a destination or specific dates in mind.

Across the board, average trip lengths are flat year-on-year for short-haul destinations, while for long haul they’re down by one to two days overall.

Top trending destinations for EMEA travellers

It’s all about long-haul holidays

Rapidly rising destinations for EMEA travellers include a mix of long-haul beach and city spots, plus lesser-known places in Europe.

Victoria, the capital of Canada’s British Columbia, and Marmagao, in India’s southern state of Goa, have accelerated in interest by over 1,600% compared to the same period last year, with Panama City growing by over 1,300%. All have an average trip length of around two weeks.

Three European destinations make up the top 10: Bol, on the Croatian island of Brač; the Kosovan capital of Pristana; and Lampedusa, the largest of the Italian Pelagie Islands. A littler closer to home, all have an average trip length of seven to 12 days.

Average trip lengths are down for each destination, except for La Romana in the Dominican Republic and Pristina, where they’ve stayed the same, and Tulum, Mexico, which sees a slight increase to 10 days.

European capital cities are popular among AMER travellers

They’re casting their nets far and searching worldwide

Global cities make up AMER travellers’ most searched-for summer destinations in 2024, with five continents making the top 10.

‘Everywhere’ tops the list, followed by Tokyo. European capital cities such as Rome, Madrid, Paris and Athens are all popular, with an average trip length of 12 to 15 days.

Within the region, San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina and Orlando, Florida claim the fourth and fifth spots, with shorter trip lengths of seven and nine days respectively.

Asian destinations include Manila and Bangkok. Unsurprisingly, they boast longer trip lengths of around 20 days and 15 days respectively. Across the board, however, average trip lengths have declined from 2023.

Smaller regional cities see a rise in demand

Four of the most popular destinations overall are also some of the biggest trending: San Carlos de Bariloche, Tokyo, Madrid and Orlando. Searches to San Carlos de Bariloche have grown over 750% in 12 months.

Outside of these four are regional destinations throughout the Americas, including Medellin in Colombia, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Ushuaia in Argentina, Porto Seguro in Brazil and Santiago, Chile – with travellers choosing to visit each for between eight and 10 days.

Closing the top 10 is Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, with its average trip length down five days to 29 days.

Trip length is down for every destination year-on-year.

Most popular destinations for APAC travellers

They’re choosing well-known European and US summer spots

The top destinations for APAC travellers for travel between June and August are well-known European and US destinations, which make most of the list. Athens, coming in fifth, has the biggest increase in trip length – up 11 days from the year before.

Like the other regions, ‘Everywhere’ places high on the list, illustrating that travellers – no matter where they live – love help discovering destinations to visit.

Tokyo is the only destination with a single digit trip length. When APAC travellers do travel long haul for their holiday, they make the most of it – spending around two weeks there.

While New York’s trip length is down around seven days on average, Los Angeles’ is up four days, taking its total to almost 14 days.

Top trending destinations for APAC travellers

Regional destinations are popular in 2024

Most trending destinations for APAC travellers are within the region itself, with New Delhi and Shanghai experiencing the biggest growth in searches compared to the same period last year.

Outside of APAC, Jeddah, Dubrovnik and Victoria are also trending – with an average trip length between 11 and 14 days.

Pangkalan Bun in Borneo, Indonesia is the only trending destination with an increase in average trip length, moving from four to seven days.

What about the places with the biggest decline in trip length? Both are Chinese cities – Shanghai and Chengdu – which see a drop between seven and eight days.

Trip length, however, is down across the board – as travellers in APAC, much like those in other regions, search for shorter trips.
